CCDA Cafe

On Wednesday night, we had a wonderful time at the CCDA Cafe where over 90 people from all over the city (plus Annapolis, MD and Tidewater) heard from Dave Clark…and from one another.  After a time of fellowship, Dave talked with us about the CCDA philosophy, consisting of…

8 Key Components:

  • Empowerment
  • Relocation: Living Among the People
  • Indigenous Leadership Development
  • Reconciliation: Bridging the Racial Divide
  • Wholistic Ministry
  • Redistribution: Working Towards a Just Distribution of Resources
  • Listening to the Community
  • Church-Based Community Development
Upcoming Training:
We plan to bring speakers back to discuss these in greater detail.  After taking a quick survey, the top 3 choices turned out to be:
  • Indigenous Leadership Development
  • Reconciliation:  Bridging the Racial Divide
  • Listening to the Community
Follow-up Opportunities:
  • If you would like to become a member, see this link….Membership.
  • If you missed the gathering and would like to receive the materials or a copy of the CD, please contact me and we will make arrangements to get them to you.
  • If you are interested in helping us plan, communicate and organize these trainings or other networking opportunities, please contact me as well.  Thanks!

Is Richmond Important to God?

Take a listen…and see how God answers this question as He speaks through Tim Keller.  You know….there is nothing else I can say or add to this video at this time.  I probably need to listen to it about 100 more times to fully comprehend what God is saying to me through Tim Keller during this short (about 17 minutes) video.  Thankfully there is a related white paper for the Lausanne Movement in Cape Town 2010 available here. As I head out to the hair salon in a couple of minutes, I will take the paper version to read, re-read and highlight.  And pray expectantly…that I hear more from the Lord as I do.

This SATURDAY…. Waiting for ‘Superman’

“WAITING FOR “SUPERMAN” is a film that we made for and about kids who are struggling to get a great education and their parents who are doing everything they can to ensure that they get it. As you know, this is a dauntingly complex problem. There are many factors that led to the current state of our nation’s education system and there are many ways to put it back on the path to success. Reform will look different in each community, and it will take a variety of actions at all levels of society to make lasting change.”

Davis Guggenheim, Director and Lesley Chilcott, Producer

You are invited to view and discuss this documentary at our home.  Let’s talk about how we can make a difference in the lives of the kids in our community.  Here’s the 411:

‘This is Discipling’

Some of you have asked….what is a Missional Community and what do you do?

Every Thursday at 6pm, a group of us (mainly from the Northside of RVA) get together in our home.  What do we do?  We fellowship (which basically means talk and eat great food together),  We study God’s Word (also known as the Bible) and pray (talk to God).  We live out God’s mission together (which means we encourage each other to love God more and to love our neighbors) in our everyday lives in our community, at work, at the gym, at the barber shop….wherever we spend our day.  It isn’t project based.  It’s just life.

Weekly, we also have Kids Missional Community, where we do the same thing, but for neighborhood kids.

I recently found this video online and thot I would share it because it describes beautifully what we are doing.  This is the way we roll….in Southern Barton Heights and beyond. If you want to be a part or learn more, feel free to contact me!

Another Side of Father’s Day

This week, as Father’s Day approaches, Louis works on his sermon, and I see/hear ads that encourage us to buy cards, ties, power tools, dinners, etc. for our Dads.  It’s quite inescapable and has me thinking….

Before proceeding, please know that I am NOT judging, and judgmental comments won’t be allowed. Let’s keep it respectful.

I am fully aware that Father’s Day isn’t always a joyful, loving, memorable, ‘Hallmark’ holiday for all fathers, mothers or children.  Often times…a father doesn’t have an opportunity to interact with their children on a frequent, regular basis.  This may be because the Dad may be away in the military or travel a lot for their job, may have died an untimely death, may be emotionally absent, or may be abusive.  It could also be a father who is currently incarcerated or chooses to be unengaged with their children….at any and all ages.  In addition, you have kids who were born to single moms – some with and without Dad involved…

64% of all births in Richmond occurring to women who are single at the time of birth. This is not just a teen pregnancy issue. 75% of these non-marital births are to women 20 years of age or older. Non-marital births are up from 10% in 1950, 20% in 1965, to 63% in 2007. See chart on page 3.

The Richmond Family & Fatherhood Initiative examines these costs and offers solutions in the document entitled “Cost & Solutions to Family Fragmentation & Father Absence in Richmond, VA”

There are many reasons why Father’s Day can be a tough day for many people.  Louis’s dad passed away when he and his sister were 14 and 12, respectively.  Some of my friends don’t have fond memories of their fathers due to neglect, addictions, and abuse.  Some of the kids I know and hang out with were born to single moms, and their dad’s aren’t active at all in their lives. Some Dads I know are wanting to reconcile with their families after being estranged for quite some time, yet the pain is so deep…they aren’t allowed back in….YET.

Churches across the nation celebrate and honor fathers on Father’s Day…and celebrate we should!  Fathers make a huge impact on their family when they are lovingly engaged with their wives and children.  In a recently published book, The Art of Roughhousing by Anthony DeBenedet states that fathers have a unique contribution to their kids, that nurturing mom’s can’t necessarily fill.  (You can hear more about the book on this video.)  Something as simple as rambunctious play makes a difference!  For many, many reasons children need their dads.  (Additional impacts can be found in the document link above.)

How can we, as the church, play a positive, supportive role in engaging fathers with their families, fill in the gap for fathers who aren’t able to spend time with their kids, encourage single moms and dads, etc?  This is a very complex situation in our city and nation.  There is not an easy answer.  If it were, we wouldn’t be talking about it.

So…this Father’s Day, let’s take time to honor and encourage biological and spiritual fathers.  Go buy the cake, the tie, the golf club, the dinner.  Have the special service and prayer at church.  But, let’s also remember and encourage the single moms and others who play the father role.  Let’s remember the fatherless and the orphans.  Let’s remember those who may find this day painful or just plain over-commercialized.  In addition, I’d be remiss if I didn’t include the remembering the pain of the childless, wanna-be fathers.

My simple prayer, this Father’s Day weekend….

Abba Father, turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers. (Malachi 4:6)

In the name of Jesus, your son and my brother, I pray.  Amen.

Lowe’s knows…Kids!

It’s Lowe’s old branding, I know…but it worked so well!  I have been doing a little research on free things to do with some of the neighborhood kids.  Louis and I don’t have kids of our own, so I don’t come with a bag of tricks up my sleeve.  So, thankfully the internet is FULL of great info.  So, Saturday, CJ, Deshawn, Larry, Elijah and I went to Lowe’s Home Improvement’s Build and Grow Clinic and built a bi-plane!  We had a BLAST!  They do these twice a month, so let me know if you would like to take some of the kids in June!  The next 2 consist of…

6.11     Goofy Golf

6.25    Waving Flag

While you are there, you can pick up some of your home improvement supplies!  Make it doubly worth the trip!  Thanks, Lowe’s!

“My friends are my estate.” Emily Dickenson

“My friends are my estate.”
– Emily Dickinson

I feel like the most blessed person in the world!  If my friends are my estate….that also makes me the RICHEST person in the world.  Yesterday, we had our annual Community Memorial Day Cookout….and Birthday Bash.  I call it a Memorial Day Cookout and Louis always includes my birthday as well, which is today.  We opened our yard and our hearts to our community of neighbors and friends to celebrate.  Over 60 people were in attendance.  It was awesome for neighbors to meet neighbors…young and old alike…to make new friends.

Our Missional Community was there to help by lending a hand…setting up and tearing down the tables, meeting new people, building deeper relationships, and just chillin’ in the heat!  Many times, community gatherings around here lead to verbal fights, physical altercations, guns and shooting, and other negativity that just disturbs the community.  We had none of that!  We had….

  • great food.  Thanks to Rush and Louis manning grill…chicken and hot dogs!!! and everyone bringing a covered dish.
  • wonderful respectful, positive conversations.
  • laughter, games and fun.
  • connections and friendships being made.  Some of the youth were meeting for the first time…since they go to different high schools.
  • a few people who heard about our Thursday night gatherings who are going to come and check us out.

Again…I am blessed to have called these folks my friends.  God intends for us to be in relationship with Him and with one another. We practiced that yesterday. The Bible has over 100 verses on friends, friendship, etc.  Here is one of my favorites…

John 15:12-15 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

Enjoy some pics of our time together…meet my friends…
