The Wigwam – Part 2
Posted: Monday, June 14, 2010 | Author: Marti Williams | Filed under: 2k10, 2k5 and before | Tags: A People Called Northminster, Barton Heights Baptist Church, Frederick Jarrad Anderson, Northminster Baptist Church, Richmond, RVA, Southern Barton Heights, The Wigwam | 2 CommentsIn June 8th’s post The Wigwam, I shared some new information on our property. You may want to read that post to bring you up-to-date. I’m was thrilled later in the day when I heard from my friend Tim Holtz that Barton Heights Baptist Church was now known as Northminster Baptist Church. I had discerned that during some of my online research, but it was confirmed by Tim! Later, Tim brought me a copy of a book, A People Called Northminster which is the history of Barton Heights and Northminster Churches from 1891-1978, written by Frederick Jarrad Anderson in 1979.
Thanks for the encouraging emails, calls, and overall response! I really appreciate it! Here are responses to some of the questions that have been raised…
- Where are Barton Heights Methodist and Baptist churches now?
- As previously stated, the Baptist Church is now Northminster Baptist Church.
- I don’t know where Barton Heights Methodist Church is today…but would LOVE to know!!!!
- What did the Wigwam look like?
- A picture was included in both books I received.
- How long was The Wigwam around?
- Based on what I have determined, the Wigwam was still standing as of 1978 when A People Called Northminster was written. Just today I was working at my desk and looked out the window where my birdfeeders are; and a car stopped on the side of the road. A gentleman got out and was looking down in the gutter/curb. I thot that maybe there was maybe a hurt dog or cat. As I raised the window to ask if everything was OK, he shared with me that he grew up at 2101 Barton Ave and he was giving his mom a tour of their old neighborhood.
- This family had lived IN the Wigwam!!!! Yes…IN the Wigwam. I had to quickly get out of my house and run outside to meet them. The Scott Family had much to share with my about what it was like back in the day….before the Wigwam burned down. Tom Scott showed me where his sister, Carol had carved her name in the curb on 10.23.1962. Yes…it was still there!
- They added the 2nd floor to the Wigwam and the round area was their living room. At some point after the Scott’s moved, the Wigwam was destroyed in a fire. The Scotts and I exchanged phone numbers and emails…and just can’t wait to hear more! God sooo blessed me with this visit today.
- What did Barton Heights look like back then?
- Here’s a picture of the viaduct for the street car, where the 1st Street Bridge is now. Downtown is to the left, SBH to the right.

Check out the new STEP video. STEP is a ministry that I work with that serves Gilpen Court in downtown Richmond, VA. We recently celebrated the end of another year of the Victory Reading Program. We are so proud of the children and thankful for the parent participants and the volunteers. Check out what parents had to say.
We are looking for funding and volunteers to support our summer programs and would greatly appreciate your help! See below for more information.
Thanks sooo much for watching, listening, reading and considering!

The Wigwam
Posted: Tuesday, June 8, 2010 | Author: Marti Williams | Filed under: 2k10 | Tags: Barton Heights Baptist Church, community center, missionary, NeighborWorks Resource Group, Rediscover The Barton Heights Community, Richmond, RVA, Southern Barton Heights, The Wigwam, Urban | 6 CommentsMy friend, Cindy Mims recently discovered a booklet called Rediscover the Barton Heights Community provided by Richmond Neighborhood Housing Services…now known as NeighborWorks Resource Group. It was produced with funds from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development through the City of Richmond’s Community Development and Block Grant Program. It was designed and information compiled by NorthLight Publishing (2/95).
So, I learned something new….and I am REALLY excited about it!!!
First, the booklet claims on page 5 that “An array of promotional advertising described the community as ‘a children’s paradise, a model village and an oasis in the desert of hard times for the working man.’” That really brings me hope! And this work…our ministry…once again reminds me of Ezra and Nehemiah rebuilding Jerusalem.
Second, on pages 9-10 it talks about the churches back in the day. It describes how a group of 16 residents were meeting in a one resident’s living room to study the Word. Then it goes on to say,
“After several meetings in private homes the Sunday school met at the Wigwam, a community building located at the northeast corner of Barton Avenue and Roberts Street. The Wigwam, noted as an odd-shaped wooden structure, was the scene of many community activities including dances….While meeting at the Wigwam, the church slowly grew from the original sixteen to twenty-seven members: nine women and eighteen men. Soon the church decided to take a venture in faith and build a permanent church home.”
My friends and readers…it is awesome to report…that Miss Marti’s House stands at that very corner….the NE corner of Barton and Roberts.
Lastly, this led me to do a little more research. A quick internet search brought me to more historic information on Barton Heights on a website: www.livingplaces.com. More on the Wigwam from that site:
“The first building to serve the neighborhood’s religious congregations was the Wigwam (1891) at the corner of Barton and Roberts (No. 2017). Originally a community center, its early date reflected the tight community being established…It was the Methodists who first used the Wigwam before they built their new sanctuary in 1893 on North Avenue.…The Barton Heights Baptist Church was also first organized in the Wigwam.”
I have always thought of my home, my space, my property…Miss Marti’s House…as holy ground…a house of peace…God’s house. It is so cool to pick up on the past….the history of the NE corner of Barton and Roberts…and continue God’s work over a century later….as a community center AND as a place where people meet to study the Word…the beginning of not just 1 church, but 2….maybe there will be 3?!?!? But, I am not thinking about building A church…but about building THE church!
The current history of many corners throughout SBH includes prostitution, drug deals, loitering, etc. But I have hope that from this corner…the NE corner of Barton and Roberts…stands a Light…a Light in the darkness.
What else might the Lord want to use this corner for? Could it be to bring hope, healing and health to a community that strives to again be known for ‘a children’s paradise, a model village and an oasis in the desert…”?
Isaiah 58:12
12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins
and will raise up the age-old foundations;
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,
Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

Cook.Out.
Posted: Monday, June 7, 2010 | Author: Marti Williams | Filed under: 2k10, Louis and Me! | Tags: Birthday, cook-out, May 31, Memorial Day, photography, Southern Barton Heights | 1 CommentLouis LOVES to celebrate my birthday….more than I do actually. I love him all the more for it. My birthday conflicts each year with Memorial Day and/or the Greek Fest….falling either on one or the other. But, that’s OK. Because it extends my birthday usually for a week! Lots of little surprises along the way.
May 31st is my birthday…and this year…also Memorial Day. So, we had a cookout. Louis called it my birthday cookout; and I called it a Memorial Day cookout. We had a great time with friends and neighbors on a windy HOT HOT day!
I am soooo blessed with a wonderful, loving husband, fabulous community of family, friends and neighbors! Thanks for a GREAT evening! Love you all!!!
One of the birthday surprises was a new camera. Still learning how to use it…but enjoy them none the less. Maybe next year I will get photography lessons! LOL

It’s been a while…
Posted: Sunday, June 6, 2010 | Author: Marti Williams | Filed under: 2k10, Louis and Me! | Tags: Birthday, community, Memorial Day, Oh Happy Day, seek ye first the kingdom, shooting, Southern Barton Heights | Comments Off on It’s been a while…I know….I’ve been kinda absent for a while…let’s call it a full month!!! I have left stories hangin’! Sorry about that! No excuses…just life gettin’ in the way! Ouch…just realized that my last real post was early May. That is B*A*D! So…let me get you caught up on our present lives and all of our distractions, then in upcoming days…I’ll take you back and finish a story or 2.
A lot has been going on lately, here in SBH and at M2H. Interestingly enough, on May 4th, I shared in Oh Happy Day! about what a great day I was having…and how the Lord had spoke… “Seek ye first the kingdom of God.” So…we get this clear message and we are feeling GOOD. Like we have our marching orders!
Then, WHAM! BLAM! ZING! out of nowhere….distractions hit. Why is it a surprise that we will be hit with distractions on the heels of a God moment?!?!? These distractions took the form of relational conflicts (yes, more than one….all at the same time!!!) where Louis was used as a sounding board and a peacemaker of sorts. In addition, a dear friend in Northern Virginia passed away. Louis gets sick as a dog. Poor thing was wiped out by a upper respiratory infection. Lastly, there has been a bit of conflict in our community lately…for which we are seeking prayers.
I won’t go into a lot of detail to protect confidences, but we have an AWESOME community!!! The residents of Southern Barton Heights are among the BEST ever! I have a sense of pride and joy when I look around and think about the many, many friends (dare I say family!!) that I have made…and the cohesive community that has formed and is forming even as we speak. I have lived here but a short 5 years….and Louis for a 1.5 years…and we know most of our neighbors up and down Barton and Lamb Avenues around our home. And…we continue to meet more! Louis and I have lived in a number of communities over the years and have experienced NOTHING like the sense of community that we feel here. I know more of my neighbors now than in all the other communities combined! I wouldn’t change it for the WORLD!
Although we may differ in our experiences, our opinions and our thoughts, for the most part, we respect one other. Now, there are some whose thoughts and actions differ GREATLY from where the overall community wants to continue to head and are NOT respecting others and are spreading fear, hate and distrust. But, we will continue to partner together and with the authorities to minimize these criminal and unlawful activities that we see and experience.
In addition, as reported on the news there was a multiple shooting just a block away, where 2 guys got shot at 4:30p on Friday, 5.28. Yes…that is 4:30 in the afternoon….when the kids are playing and riding their bikes. When people are coming home from work ready to start their weekend. When people are walking to the deli for something cold to drink. Thankfully, the 2 victims will survive! And…an investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, life moves on….the school year comes to an end. The H*O*T summer seems to have come early. The Stonehouse Pool in Battery Park is now open and a Memorial Day/Birthday cookout starts us out right. Pics and vids to come in the next post…
